The Watauga High wrestling team went through its toughest test of the season, at least so far.
The Pioneers had one place finishser and finished 29th as a team

with 33 points at the Tiger Classic in Chapel Hill. Mark Townsend (12-6) at 106 pounds finished sixth. He lost to Andrew Wanovich of Jack Britt by pinfall (at 2:24) in their fifth-place match.
Townsend was 2-3 against a very competitive field. Following a first-round bye, he defeated Zachary Dean of Parkview 5-1 in the second round and Raymond Washington of Trinity 16-14 in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, Townsend's run was derailed by Irvin Enriquez of Pinecrest in the semifinals. Townsend lost by pinfall (in 1:15). He dropped a 5-1 decision to Nate Bridges of Creekview 5-1 in the consolation semifinals.
The Pioneers only took seven wrestlers (Townsend, Gus Coffey, Demetre Kostis, Jonah Critcher, Jeremy Critcher, Jake Page and Eli Hawley) to the tournament. Coffey, who was undefeated going in, suffered his first two losses of the season competing at 120 pounds. Coffey (19-2) made it to the quarterfinals before he was bested by Drew Ferguson of Collins Hill by pinfall (1:42). He was eliminated by Ballard Robinette of East Chapel Hill in the consolation round, losing by pinfall in 4:22. Coffey had a pair of pinfall victories to start the tournament. He defeated Alex Gilligan of Carboro (0:59) and Stephen Black of Piedmont (3:12).
Kostis made it to the fourth round of the consolation round at 138 pounds before he was elimianted. He dropped an  8-5 decsision to Casey Bruce of Trinity.  Kostis (21-4) was 3-2 against the field. He pinned Brandon Baxter of Olympic (3:35) in this first match, but he lost 7-2 to Casey Belville of Independence in the second round. Kostis bounced back with a pair of wins in the consolation round. He defeated Robert Witte of Southview by pinfall (0:42) and Garrett Grevenstuk of Eastern Randolph 5-2 before he was eliminated.
Jonah Critcher (14-8) went 2-2 at 182 pounds. He defeated Andrew Hotong of Chapel Hill by major decision (13-3) in his first match. He lost to Michael Brennan of Union Pines by techincal fall (18-3) in his second-round match. Critcher won his first consolation match by pinning Aderrick Snipes of Orange in 42 seconds before he was eliminated by Brian Tiderman of Independence by major decision, 12-4.
Jeremy Critcher (10-11) at 195 pounds, Hawley (0-9) at 126, and Page (3-15) at 170 all went 0-2. Collins Hill won the tournament with 281.5; Pinecrest finished a distant second with 178 points.
"It's one of the toughest tournaments in the state," said WHS coach Todd Allan. "We only took seven guys, and we did get one place finisher out of it. The guys competed well, but the field was very strong."
WHS travels to Marion for the McDowell duals next Saturday, January 7.
