Missing Man Found in Avery PDF Print

A missing Kings Mountain man was found Christmas night with the help of technology and timing on the part of an Avery deputy.  Avery dispatch received a call around 7pm about a man, said to be suffering a cognitive impairment, driving a car—the ‘OnStar’ equipment in his Buick showing him to be in Avery County. With dispatchers notified, they gave out a description of the gold car to an Avery deputy in the area, and he reported that he just passed such a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.  He managed to turn and catch up with the vehicle on US 19E, and after confirming the tag with the reporting agency in Cleveland County, he waited for a place to safely pull over the driver.  That spot turned out to be in an area of the county where radio reception was not clear for the deputy, and he appeared to miss the information that the man had his dog with him and might be carrying a handgun.  But the traffic stop was made and the man was taken back to Newland where OnStar officials were diverting family members, who had been heading to Yancey County, where last contact with the car had been made.
