Western Carolina University will introduce ASU assistant coach Mark Speir as its new football coach at a press conference

this morning at 11 a.m.
Speir, 43, is the inside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at ASU who also spent five years (1991-96) as an assistant at WCU.
WCU will hand over its program over to Speir, who has never been a coordinator or a head coach. He is a 1990 graduate of Clemson who was a student assistant there and also served as an assistant coach at Elon and Presbyterian before coming to ASU in 2003.
Speir had a final interview in Cullowhee on Tuesday and he will replace Dennis Wagner, who resigned in November with an 8-36 record, one game shy of four full seasons with the Cats.
At ASU, Speir is part of a staff that since 2005 has won three FCS national championships, six SoCon titles and reached the FCS playoffs seven consecutive seasons.
Speir inherits a football program that is 11-56 the past six seasons (3-43 in the Southern Conference). The Catamounts were 1-10 last season and were outscored 502-242, finishing with one of the worst defenses statistically among 120 FCS programs.
