Freeman Leads Women's Hoops Over CofC PDF Print

Courtney Freeman scored a career-high 22 points to lead Appalachian State University women’s basketball past College of Charleston, 71-52, on Monday night at the Holmes Center.
Freeman sank 7-of-15 shots and all eight of

her free throws to pace the Mountaineers (8-1, 3-0 SoCon) to the win. She added six rebounds and a pair of assists in the league win. ASU extended its winning streak to eight games with the win.
The Cougars (2-7, 1-3) managed just 19 points in the first half and trailed the entire game after the Apps jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held CofC without a bucked for the first four minutes.
Appalachian never led by less than 10 points after taking their first double-digit lead of the game (12-2) with 15:51 remaining in the first half.
The Mountaineers shot 40.5 percent (15-for-37) in the first half and outrebounded the Cougars 32-18 through the first 20 minutes of lay. Freeman scored 14 points in the first half while Anna Freeman had 12. College of Charleston did not have a single player score more than five points in the first half.
ASU kept the pressure on in the second half by forcing 15 second-half turnovers to help extend its lead to as many as 25 points on three occasions in the final moments.
Anna Freeman ended the contest with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 3-for-4 effort from behind the arc. Kelsey Sharkey chipped in with six points and eight rebounds while Catherine Williams pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
Ashleigh Kelly scored four points and ripped down five rebounds in her first action of the season.
As a team, the Mountaineers shot 33.3 percent (26-for-78) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-for-11) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (16-for-24) from the charity stripe.
The Cougars managed to shoot just 30.9 percent (17-for-55) from the floor, 14.3 percent (3-for-21) from deep and 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the free-throw line.
Appalachian State pulled down 60 rebounds to CofC’s 38, forced 28 turnovers and notched 17 steals while committing 1 turnovers of its own.
The Mountaineers return to action against No. 13 Georgia at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22 from Stegeman Coliseum. Appalachian State plays its next home game at noon on Dec. 31 against Longwood.
GAME NOTES: Appalachian State forced 10 or more turnovers for the 76th-straight game... the Apps improved to 46-10 when A. Freeman has 10 or more points... with her 19 points, A. Freeman needs just 24 points to become the 21st player in ASU history with 1,000 career points... she also had two steals to give her 205 in her career and notched two blocks to push her career total to 157...  Williams picked up one block in the contest to notch her 8st career block just two shy of moving into sixth-place all-time at ASU...  the team’s 60 rebounds were the most since also snagging 60 in an overtime win over Miami (OH) on Nov. 28, 2009... the Apps outscored the Cougars 30-26 in the paint, 22-13 off turnovers and 22-12 on second-chance buckets.
