WHS Gains Split At Hickory Meet PDF Print

The Watauga men's and women's swimming teams gained a split last Wednesday at Lenior Rhyne University in a meet hosted by Hickory High.
The women lost all three of their meets against

St. Stephens (55-39), Hickory (59-35), and Hibriten (50-44). Darby Middlebrook finished second in the 200 IM (2:27.09) and she finished second in the 100 breast stroke (1:15.11). Hailey Middlebrook finished second in the 100 free style (1:02.41) and she finished third in the 100 back stroke (1:10.35). The Pioneers also turned in a second-place finish in the 400 free style relay (4:16.26 Hailey Middlebrook, Dakota Wilson, Darby Middlebrook, Anne Taylor). Anne Taylor was third in the 50 free style (:27.22).

"I thought we swam well against some tough competition," said WHS coach David Gragg. " The girls meet was extremely difficult.  Hickory, St. Stephens, and Hibriten have some fast swimmers who train all year, so they will be tough to beat this year.  This meet showed some of weaknesses and our overall lack of conditioning at this point.  Sickness and fatigue are facts we will have to overcome in the next few weeks.  Sidney Wiswell stepped up and help out in events that I needed her to help fill.  Anne Taylor is continuing to have strong freshman campaign.  She has a county meet the week before and performed well there.  She was disappointed she did not win but can use that as motivation."
On the men's side, WHS defeated St. Stephens (60-34), Hickory (59-35) and Hibriten (72-22). The PIoneers won three events, the 200 medley relay (1:53.46,  and that team consisted of (Sam Erwin, Justin Zumbo, Marcus Funston, and Forrest Brown), the 200 free style relay (1:46.51, Forrest Brown, Sam Erwin, Ben Watson, Brandon Michelson), and Marcus Funston won the 100 butterfly (:58.53).
Brandon Michealson finished second in the 200 free style (2:12.23) and the 500 free style (5:53.59); Justin Zumbo finished second in the 100 free style (:58.35); Forest Brown was third in the 50 free style (:24.50); WHS finished second in the 400 free style relay (3:49.14, Forrest Brown, Justin Zumbo, Brandon Michelson, Marcus Funston).

"The boys has a strong showing," Gragg said. "St. Stephens top swimmer was not at the meet, but I thought our depth pulled out some quality wins.  I have been using the meets as a way to find out where we need to be at the conference meet, and the boys have responded.  Brandon Michelson and Ben Watson swam well in 200 and 500 Freestyles.  Adam Patton competed well in events that I needed him to swim and not really ones he would prefer to swim.  I have told the team that the best way for us to win is for the everyone to score and not rely upon the top two or three. We will use this break to work on our conditioning and fundamentals.  By the time we get back from break, it will be less than 3 weeks until the conference meet."

WHS travels to Valdese on January 4 in four-team meet with Draughn, East Burke and South Iredell.
