The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has named Appalachian State defender Lee Williams (Liverpool, England/Hillside) to the 2011 NCAA Men’s

Division I All-South First Team, as announced by the NSCAA on Friday.
ASU head coach Matt Nelson was pleased with the announcement. “With the season that the team had defensively this year, it’s nice to see Lee get noticed by the other coaches in the region,” said Nelson. “His hard work throughout the year earned him this fantastic honor that I am proud he was able to achieve.”
The second-team all-Southern Conference selection was a key member of Appalachian’s stout defense, which allowed just 12 goals on the year for a Southern-Conference best 0.63 goals-against average. The Apps also kept their opponents from scoring in 11 of 19 games (58%), and the Black and Gold rank sixth in the nation in both figures. Williams also distinction as ASU’s only player to spend every minute of the season on the field.
After the Mountaineers recorded back-to-back shutouts against Coastal Carolina (1-0) and Hartwick (3-0), Williams was named tournament Defensive MVP at the Coastal Carolina/adidas Tournament. College Sporting News selected Williams to the national Team of the Week following the event.
The junior also received recognition as all-tournament at the Davidson/adidas Classic following a 0-0 draw with Gardner-Webb (9/9) and a 2-0 victory over Detroit (9/11).
Williams becomes Appalachian’s first all-region selection since Arie Muniz was named to the NSCAA’s all-South third team in 2009.
