Appalachian State senior Chip Powell (Greensboro, N.C./S.W. Guilford) has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competitions from November 30 - December 6. Powell earned a pair of
dual-meet wins last week as Appalachian State squared off against No. 14 Virginia Tech and SoCon newcomer Gardner-Webb.
On Thursday, Powell earned a first-period pin (2:40) over the Hokies’ Cameron Hurd and gave the Mountaineers their first lead in the match, 10-8. The nationally-ranked Hokies were unable to regain the lead until four bouts later.
On Monday, Powell picked up the Black and Gold’s fastest pin, defeating GWU’s Alex Medved in 1:53 as the Mountaineers routed the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 41-2.
Powell has earned pins in each of his last three duals and, including tournaments, also has a winning streak of three-straight pins. He currently leads the team with a career-high seven pins this year.
Powell’s selection is Appalachian’s second of the year, following Austin Trotman (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) who received the season’s premiere honors.
The Mountaineers next hit the mats on Saturday, Dec. 10 when they travel to face Ohio at noon.
