Ashe At Risk Student Help Asked of BOE PDF Print

"What keeps me awake at night is when I go home and I wonder 'did I touch base enough with that kid,' did I have time to see that student, to follow as many times as I need to." Ashe High School Counselor, Mike Tasso, made a passionate plea to Ashe County’s Board of Education to find a way to implement an Assessment, Support, and Counseling Center (ACS) program through Appalachian State University at Ashe County High School. Principal Jason Krider, Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves, and Mr. Tasso presented the ASC model which has been developed by ASU and piloted at Watauga High School. The Ashe High School administration and guidance staff, along with Superintendent Reeves, believes this model will provide better support for high risk students. The program, if implemented, will provide for more thorough assessment and higher levels of therapy than the school’s guidance staff is trained to provide. ASU professor, Dr. Kirk Michael, explained to the Board that the funding is provided through grants and the therapists are provided from Appalachian’s psychological services interns who are in the advanced stages of their training. The Board of Education was receptive to the program and authorized Superintendent Reeves to initiate the next steps required for its implementation in January. These next steps are having the program reviewed by the Board’s attorney and then developing a Memorandum of Understanding between ASU and the Ashe County Board of Education.
