The Watauga High football team closed out its successfull season with ten players being named to the Northwestern 3A/4A All-Conference team. Well, joining that group were
tight end Clint Trivette and defensive lineman David Martin.
Trivette, who may play football at Brevard College, a Division II school in Brevard, NC., and a member of the South Atlantic Conference next season, caught 17 passes last fall for 195 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, he made 14 stops and had 2.5 tackles-for-loss.
Martin, who finally came out for the team his senior year, had a splendid season. He made 91 tackles, including 30 solo stops, 12.5 TFL with three quarterback sacks, two fumble recoveries and he also scored a touchdown (against Ashe County in the second game of the season when he scooped up a fumble and rambled in from 25 yards away).
A standout on the baseball team, Martin, following a slow start last spring, moved into the lead-off spot and finished strong as the Pioneers marched their way to the NCHSAA Class 4A Sectional Finals. Martin scored 25 runs, hit four home runs, drove in 14, had a .528 slugging percentage, a 426 on-base percentage and he was 5-5 in stolen base attempts. He was also second on the team with 15 walks.
Martin and the Pioneers officially open the baseball season at A.C. Reynolds Tuesday, February 28.
