Tax Money: Hard to Get, Hard to Give Back PDF Print

In these days of tight local government budgets, how hard is it to return tax money—like $33,292.  The Ashe Board of Commissioners found that very hard last night, as Leviton Manufacturing Company officials came to ask for a refund during Monday’s meeting. There was some dissention in taking action, Commissioner Gerald Price’s first motion to deny the request

failing to garner a second and not making it to a vote. Commissioner William Sands told Teresa Bates, representing Leviton, that the county wanted to be sure before taking action. Then, painfully, Gary Roark made the motion to reimburse Leviton, and it was approved 3 to 1., Bate explained that during a recent comprehensive inventory the company discovered that their inventory was inaccurate and they had listed a greater amount of equipment assets than actually existed at the plant over a period of several years. Their request was for the return of the tax money they had overpaid up to what the statute of limitations would allow which was the past five years.
