Coffey Captures Second Tournament Title Saturday PDF Print

The 2011-12 North Carolina high school wrestling season is only two meets old, but Gus Coffey of Wataua High is off to a flying start.
Coffey, who opened the season by winning the tournament title at the Old Appalachian Invitational the

night before Thanksgiving, followed that up by winning his weight division at 113 pounds Saturday at the Falcon Frenzy at West Henderson High School in Hendersonville, NC. Coffey defeated Lance Johnson of Chase 13-10 in the finals Saturday night, imnproving his record to 7-0 on the season.
Demetre Kostis of the Pioneers took second place in the 138-pound division. He lost to Logan Young of Gibbs by pinfall (at 1:41) ih the finals. Kostis, despite the loss, is 7-2 on the year. He finished second at the Appalachian Invitational on November 23. Those were the only two place finishers for the Pioneers.
Team-wise, WHS finished 15th with 77.50 points; Gibbs won the meet with a score of 185.50
"The tournament went well," said WHS coach Todd Allan. "We finished 15th out of 30 teams nad we produced two placer finishers. Gus and Kostis wrestled very well against a competitive field. And we had a couple of guys who were close to placing."
The Pioneers return home Tuesday night for a tri- meet with Avery and Ashe County at Lenzt-Eggers Gym. The bouts begin at 5:30 p.m.
