LRU Women Defeat Western State, 76-64 In Alaska PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Basketball Team (5-1) made it two in a row with a 76-64 victory over Western State College of Colorado (1-4) Friday evening on the second day of the

2011 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational at the Patty Center.
L-R junior guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) tied a career-high with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead the Bears to the win.
Freshman guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) and senior guard Cameron Sealey (Mount Holly, N.C.) also scored in double figures for the Bears as they finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Western State's Katie Hall (Hazelton, Idaho) tallied a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds and was one of four Mountaineers to score in double figures despite the loss.
A 14-2 run to end the first half gave Lenoir-Rhyne a 40-31 advantage entering intermission and the Bears never looked back.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which held a 56-40 edge in rebounds for the game, also never let Western State get within six points the rest of the way.
The Bears would lead by as many as 18 points in the second half (71-53 with 7:11 remaining) and held the Mountaineers to just 33 percent shooting (22-of-67) for the contest.
Taylor Murray (Howe, Texas) added 12 points for Western State, who suffered its second consecutive setback.
On the final day of the invitational Saturday, Lenoir-Rhyne takes on the host school, Alaska-Fairbanks, beginning at 11:30 p.m., after West Liberty and Western State face off at 9:15 p.m.

LRU Women Down West Liberty, 68-52, Thursday In Alaska

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (4-1) defeated West Liberty (3-2), 68-52, on the first day of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational Thursday at the Patty Center.  Alaska-Fairbanks is serving as the host institution.
L-R was led by senior guard Cameron Sealey's (Mount Holly, N.C.) 15 points while freshman guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.) and junior guard Caroline Laughter (Hickory, N.C.) added 12 points each as the Bears rebounded from their first loss of the season last Saturday.
Junior guard Whitley Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) was the fourth player to score in double figures for Lenoir-Rhyne as she finished with 10 points as the Bears held the Hilltoppers to just 36 percent shooting (20-of-59) for the game.
The Hilltoppers were led by Kayla Ayers' (Parkersburg, W.Va.) game-high 22 points while Hillary Southworth (Twinsburg, Ohio) also scored in double figures (12 points) despite the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which led by a 33-26 score at intermission, held a 40-34 advantage in rebounds and forced West Liberty into 17 turnovers on the night.
L-R will next face Western State (Colo.) on the second day of the tournament Friday beginning at 9:15 p.m.  West Liberty takes on Alaska-Fairbanks on Friday as well beginning at 11:30 p.m.
