Where can you buy a good glass of beer around here? That’s the question still being debated by Boone Town Council as they heard yet another request from a business that wants to be able to sell beer by the glass in Boone. Shawn Spiegelman came before Council members last night requesting them to schedule a special joint meeting with the planning board to see if they could find a way to get approval for establishing a micro-brewery in Boone and additionally allowing it to sell its product, by the glass, on premise. Most recently the owners of Peabody’s had requested that Council find a way to allow them to sell beer by the glass in their establishment. The referendum on alcohol sales that passed in 1986 only allowed hotels and restaurants to have on premises sale of beer by the glass. The Council has indicated interest in trying to find a way to allow establishments like Mr. Peabody’s and, if approved in the future, micro-breweries to sell beer by the glass. As a result they have directed staff to gather information on what other towns similar to Boone have done to successfully allow this practice. During their follow up discussion Council members Phillips and Ball indicated their awareness of three other micro-breweries wanting to establish in Boone and decided to schedule a meeting with the planning commission to discuss this matter.
