Montana State University has a No.1 ranking for the first time in school history. And the Bobcats (9-1) did it without even playing last week. Montana State, which was second in the polls last week climbed to No.1, when North Dakota State, which led the top spot the last two weeks, dropped a 27-24 decision at home to Youngstown State. The Bison (9-1) fall to fifth in both The Sports Network and FCS Coaches Top 25 Polls. But the Bison did receive one first-place vote in TSN Poll. Montana State, which closes out the regular season with an in-state rivarly game against No. 7 Montana, The Bobcats received 76 first-place votes in the TSN Poll, and 18 first-place votes in the Coaches Poll.
Sam Houston State is ranked second in the TSN Poll, and the Bearcats third in the Coaches Poll. And the Bearcats (10-0) also received their share of first-place votes. Sam Houston State received 71 first-place votes in TSN Poll and eight in the Coaches Poll.
Georgia Southern, which won its first SoCon title since 2002 (the Eagles shared the championship in 2004), are ranked second in the Coaches Poll, and received two first-place votes; they're third in TSN Poll and received eight first-place votes. The Eagles (9-1) close out the regular season at Alabama on Saturday. The Crimson Tide (9-1) is ranked third this week in the Associated Press Top 25 at the Football Bowl Sub-Division level.
Montana State, Sam Houston State, Georgia Southern, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State round out the top five in TSN Poll; Montana State, Georgia Southern, Sam Houston State, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State round out the top five in the Coaches Poll.
If you're wondering about Appalachian State. The Mountaineers (7-3), who crushed hapless Western Carolina Saturday, are ranked ninth in TSN Poll and eighth in the Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers, who must win out to secure a spot in the Football Championship Sub-Division Playoffs, which officially begin Saturday, November 26, close out the regular season Saturday at Elon. The Phoenix upended Furman last Saturday.
Wofford College (7-3), which lost the SoCon championship to Georgia Southern on Saturday, is 12th in TSN Poll and 13th in the Coaches Poll. The Terriers close out the regular season at Chattanooga on Saturday. Remember, if Wofford wins, the Terriers would clinch second-place in the SoCon because they beat ASU in Spartanburg, S.C., back on October 1..
The FCS playoff pairings will be announced Sunday, November 20.
