Appalachian State University football’s Orry Frye (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Troy Sanders (Chester, S.C./Chester) have earned Capital One Academic All-District III recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), CoSIDA announced on Friday.
Appalachian is the only Southern Conference football-playing institution with multiple honorees on this year’s Academic All-District teams. Frye and Sanders comprise two of the SoCon’s six selections overall.
A senior offensive lineman with a 3.48 grade point average in computer information systems, Frye has started 36-consecutive games for the Mountaineers at right tackle, dating back to the beginning of the 2009 season. Behind the 6-2, 280-pounder, Appalachian has allowed only 12 sacks through nine games this season, good for a tie for 28th nationally and tops among SoCon teams that do not run a run-happy triple-option offense (Georgia Southern, Wofford and The Citadel).
A junior defensive back with a 3.38 grade point average in health promotion, Sanders has made 22-straight starts for the Mountaineers, including all nine this season at strong safety. For the year, he ranks third on the team and 16th in the SoCon with 60 tackles and and tied for third on the squad and 10th in the conference with two interceptions.
With the All-District accolades, both Frye and Sanders advance to the Capital One Academic All‐America Team ballot, with first and second‐team All‐America honorees selected later this month.
Appalachian State volleyball senior Maggie Seeds has been named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic all-District III team for her performance on the court and in the classroom.
