Lenoir-Rhyne University's Kate Griewisch has been named the 2011 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women's Athlete Of The Year for NCAA Division II Cross Country. USTFCCCA is the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Griewisch, a senior from Banner Elk, N.C., wins the award for the third straight year. Griewisch is coming off first-place finishes in both the South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships this fall.
The win at the league meet was the second in three years while the regional title was Griewisch's third consecutive. Griewisch also led L-R to back-to-back South Atlantic Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009.
Griewisch is a two-time NCAA Division II All-American (2009 and 2010) in women's cross country who will be competing in the D-II cross country national championship race next Saturday, November 19, in Spokane, Wash.
Griewisch is also an All-American in outdoor track and field after finishing sixth in the women's 10,000-meter race at the national championship meet last May in Turlock, Calif.
Griewisch was named the Southeast Region women's athlete of the year in both indoor and outdoor track last spring as well by the USTFCCCA.
An outstanding student, Griewisch is the three-time South Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Of The Year (2009-11) and earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors last year.
Last June, Griewisch was named the 2010-11 female recipient of the SAC Presidents Award, the highest honor the conference gives out on an annual basis.
