Watauga High senior Ryan Turner will sign his National Letter of Intent with the Naval Academy Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the WHS Media Center. It's a huge reward for Turner, a guy that can play any position in the infield, and who really excelled at second base last season for the Pioneers.
"The coaching staff at Navy is really sold on Ryan," WHS baseball coach Pere Hardee said. "They're giving him a full baseball scholarship. And they also want him to play on the left-side of the infield. He'll fit in with them real well. They have an excellent program, and Ryan is a heck of a player."
The MidShipment reached the NCAA tournament last season. They won 33 games (33-25-1) and they were eliminated by East Carolina in the Charlottesville Regional hosted by the University of Virginia.
Turner put up big numbers for the Pioneers last season. He batted .351 with 27 hits, 29 runs scored, five doubles, a triple and three home runs. He drove in 17 runs, had a .558 slugging percentage, a .474 on-base percentage and he was 13-13 in stolen bases. Turner led the Pioneers in slugging percentage, on-base percentage and stolen bases.
