Lenoir-Rhyne's Michael Green has been named the South Atlantic Conference Football Special Teams Player Of The Week, league officials announced this afternoon. Green wins the award for the second time this season.
Green, a sophomore from Kingsland, Ga., returned
a punt 68 yards for a key touchdown in the fourth quarter in Lenoir-Rhyne's 54-42 victory over Newberry last Saturday on Senior Day at home.
Green leads the South Atlantic Conference in punt return average (17.4 yards per return) and has returned two punts for scores in 2011.
Green, the team's starting free safety, also tallied six tackles to go along with an interception against Newberry.
Green currently ranks second on the squad in takedowns this year with 60 and has a team-leading three interceptions.
Carson-Newman's Nate Inman and Tusculum's Terrance Smith were named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players Of The Week, respectively.
Lenoir-Rhyne (6-3, 5-1) is currently tied for first place in the league standings and will look to clinch at least a share of the conference title for the first time since 1994 when it travels to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Catawba (3-7, 2-4) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
