The Watuaga High boys soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Mallard Creek in double overtime Saturday night in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs at Jack Groce Stadium.
The Pioneers (16-6-1) actually took an early 1-0 lead

on a goal by Zach Helms six minutes into the game. Sam Schell had the assist.
"We jumped on top right away," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "Zach scored again to put us on top early. He's had a big year scoring goals for us this season."
But the Mavericks (15-7-2) eventually tied the game at 1-1 at the 60-minute mark of the second half off a corner kick, and they scored the game-winning goal at the 94-minute mark of the second overtime period.
"They pushed the ball in front and our defenders couldn't clear it away," McKay said. "They just tapped it in. They have an excellent team, but I thought we did a good job playing them tough."
The Pioneers, who won their first playoff game since 2008, also doubled their win total from last season.
"It was a good year," McKay said. "It was a productive year. We accomplished a lot this season."
