Middlebrook Bested By George At State Meet PDF Print
Written by Mike Kelly
Saturday, 05 November 2011 22:18

Watauga High junior Darby Middlebrook and Raleigh-Millbrook senior Samantha George traded places on Saturday.
Last year at this time, Middlebrook, who was coming into her own, pulled off a huge upset by knocking off George, the pre-race favorite to win the state championship. But this time around,

it was George's turn to play the spoiler.
The Millbrook senior set the pace and held her ground besting Middlebrook to win the Class 4A girls state championship at Beeson Park in Kernersville Saturday afternoon. George crossed the finish line nearly 17 seconds faster than Middlebrook. She finished the race in the state-record time of 17:31.63, shattering last year's record of 17:52.16 set by Middlebrook by 21 seconds. Middlebrook finished the race in 17:47.17.
"I worked so hard for this moment," George said. "Darby is a great runner and she really pushed me today. But I set my pace and I had the ability to pull away at the end. It's my last high school race, and I'm glad to go out with a state championship."
It was only the second time Middlebrook has lost a race this season, and the first time she's lost a race this fall in the state of North Carolina. Her only other loss this season came at the MileStat.Com Invitational in Chesterfield, Va., on October 15. And Middlebrook, who turned in a personal-best time of 17:35 in defending her regional title last weekend at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, admits the pressure of defending her title became rather stressful.
"I haven't had a good night's sleep in a while," she said. "I was real worried about this race. It's been building all season. I really put a lot of pressure on myself defending my state championship. Well, the season's over. I guess I can relax now for a while and get ready for nationals (on November 26)."
But despite not defending her title, Middlebrook turned in a solid race to pace the Pioneers. Unfortunately, the rest of her teammates struggled. WHS finished fifth with 167 points. WHS's next highest runner was Madison Harman, who was 14th (18:46.92). Senior Hannah Barbour, running her final cross country race for the Pioneers, was 36th (19:33.87). And she was so exhausted following the race that she needed medical assistant.
"Our girls didn't have as good a day as we had hoped," said WHS coach Randy McDonough. "We didn't get off to a strong start, and it really hurt us as the race went on. It was just a tough day for our girls. But they gave it their best shot. That's all I can ask."
Green Hope dominated the girls race besting the field with 37 points. The Falcons had six runners in the top 20. Ardrey Kell, which nosed out WHS for the regional championship last week, finished a distant second with 104 points.
Broughton won the boys race with 91 points. Mount Tabor finished nine point back with 100 points; T.C. Roberson was third with 128 points. The WHS boys finished sixth with 154 points. Mark Blackmon of West Charlotte, who won the regional championship in Charlotte last week, won the state championship as he crossed the finish line in 15:32.45. Peter Vandenberg paced the Pioneers as he turned in an all-state performance by finishing eighth in 16:06.94.
"I almost gave up on the race," Vandenberg said. "The course really started taking it's toll on me. I wasn't sure if I could finish. But I just pushed myself. I wanted to finish in the top ten."
Vandenberg is WHS's second all-state runner in as many years. Daniel Osborne captured all-state honors last fall finishing ninth.
"The Vandenbergs are very good runners," McDonough said. "I can always depend on them to run strong and to give us a strong effort. Peter really put in the time training for this season. He had an excellent year, and he really did a great job on a demanding course."
Josh Anderson was 15th (16:22) and Bryan Brackney was 28th (16:38.67). Andrew Vandenberg finished 55th (17:02.57).
"I'm proud of the boys," McDonough said. "They ran a great race. Peter set the pace and the rest followed. They ran real well against a competitive field."
