After intercepting four passes in four October games, Appalachian State University defensive back Demetrius McCray (Covington, Ga./Newton) has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Month, the league office announced on Thursday.
McCray’s four interceptions came in three games against

teams that feature run-happy triple-option offenses (Wofford, The Citadel and Georgia Southern) with the junior picking off nearly 15 percent of the 27 passes that those three opponents combined to throw. His top performance came in last Saturday’s 24-17 win over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Georgia Southern, when he intercepted two passes that led directly to Appalachian touchdowns. In the process, he became only the second Mountaineer in the last two seasons with multiple interceptions in a game.
In addition to the four interceptions, McCray also made 12 tackles on the month and broke up two passes in ASU’s 35-17 win over Samford on Oct. 22.
The honor is the first of McCray’s career and the first earned by a Mountaineer this season.
McCray and the third-ranked Mountaineers (6-2, 4-1 SoCon) travel to Furman (5-3, 4-2 SoCon) for a pivotal conference matchup on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Paladin Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
