After a three-goal effort by the Wildcats, Appalachian State men’s soccer (8-4-4, 3-2-2 SoCon) was defeated by Davidson (8-7-2, 3-2-1 SoCon) in the Apps’ Southern Conference finale on Saturday.
Davidson scored Saturday’s first goal with under two minutes to play in the first half. Dennis Shannon headed the 44th-minute goal off passes by John Pace and Peter Paras.
The Wildcats extended the lead in the 60th-minute as Thomas Zimmerman gathered a rebound of a Jake Keator shot, and Zimmerman shot from 10 yards to double the lead to 2-0.
DC iced the game in the 75th minute when Chris Pettiglio and Nick Grube broke away and Pettiglio sank the final shot to clinch the 3-0 win for Davidson.
ASU’s Sean Dreybus (Newport News, Va./Warwick) recorded both of the Mountaineers’ shots on goal; keeper Danny Free (Doncaster, England/Hall Cross School) had two saves in net.
The Mountaineers close out the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 1 when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to face ETSU at 7 p.m.
