UPDATE: ASU Student Escapes Early Morning Fire PDF Print
Written by Steve Frank

It all came together in the early morning hours today, and an ASU student is alive and unhurt thanks to some simple preparation and education.  Boone Fire and several volunteer departments were called out just before 2 this morning to an apartment fire just off of 421 North, the blaze called in by one of the two ASU students that lived in the unit. The 1:40am alarm was to Grandfather Vista unit 4 off Westview Heights, first fire units finding fire rolling out of a front window of the first floor apartment, apparently coming out of a living room area.  But Boone Fire knocked the fire down within minutes of their arrival, and only a tanker from Cove Creek joined Boone on the scene, as other departments were turned around.  Boone fire says that the young man was asleep on the sofa in the living room of the apartment when his smoke detector woke him, and he found the sofa he was on burning.  The Boone Fire report says that the sofa was too close to the electric baseboard heating element and ignited.  But fire officials say the man did just the right thing, calling 9-1-1 while running next door to alert his neighbors to the fire, getting them out—and then he closed the door—and according to Boone Fire, that kept the fire from having enough oxygen to spread before they could arrive on the scene.  Firemen spent a couple of hours after the knock-down of the fire removing furniture and other belongings from the fire scene, and shoveled through debris inside while determining the cause.  Damage estimates were put at $30,000 to the building and another $15,000 to the contents, but fire officials say it could have been much worse.
