Mountaineers Ranked Fifth In National Polls PDF Print

The Appalachian State University football team moved up a notch in The Sports Network Poll.
The Mountaineers (5-2 overall; 3-1 Southern Conference), who defeated Samford 35-17 Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium, are currently ranked fifth in The Sports Network and FCS Coaches Polls. And the Mountaineers, having won four of their last five games,

have a huge game coming up Saturday against the No.1 team in the country, Georgia Southern.
"You don't really change a lot of things," said ASU coach Jerry Moore. "We seem to be pretty much getting on track right now. Our players know the importance of this game coming up, and our coaches know the importance of this game, our fans know the importance of it. But I think we're growing up a bit by bit, and we have to focus out all the extra curricular stuff, the outside distractions. We're six games into the season and we're learning how to practice and how to prepare. And I think preparation is the biggest thing we have to do this week."
Georgia Southern, which has been No.1 since September 12, received 131 first-place votes in TSN Poll. Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Montana State and ASU round out the top five. Wofford, which lost to Furman on Saturday, falls from No.5 all the way down to 12th.
The Eagles are also ranked No.1 in the FCS Coaches Poll, and they received 27 first-place votes. Northern Iowa (one first-place vote), North Dakota State, Montana State and ASU round out the top five. Wofford, which was fourth last week, falls to ninth this week.
The last time Georgia Southern came to town undefeated and No.1 in the country was in 1999. Avery County native Paul Johnson, currently the head coach at Georiga Tech, was the head coach of the Eagles. Georgia Southern defeated the Mountaineers in Statesboro last season. Our coverage of that game begins at 1 p.m. on AM  1450, WATA.
