Hannah Petersen of the Watauga High girls tennis team made her way to the state tournament this weekend following a strong showing at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A Western Regional at South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte.Petersen, who was not seeded in singles play, won her first two matches, finished fourth, and qualified for the state tournament. The top four finishers in singles at doubles play at regionals automatically qualify for state. Petersen defeated Melissa Blate of A.C. Reynolds in her first-round match on Friday in straight sets, 6-2,6-3, and she defeated Lydia Yuan of Ardrey Kell in her second-round match, 6-3.6-4.
But Petersen lost both of her matches on Saturday. She lost to Katie Porter of Providence in the semifinal round, 6-2,6-1; and she lost to Holly Champion of Butler in the third-place match, 6-0, 6-4. The state finals will be held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Park in Raleigh this Friday and Saturday, October 28-29.
Meredith Smith, who was seeded fourth in singles play, won her first-round match on Friday against Maggie Siebert of Mooresville, 6-2,6-3; but she was eliminated in the second round by Holly Champion of Butler in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
The doubles team of Margaret Anagnos and Sarah Petersen were seeded sixth, and they made it to the second round before they were eliminated on Friday. Anagnos and Petersen defeated Nicole Hamiton and Clare Hogan of Providence in their first-round match, 6-3,6-3; but they lost to Erin Roberts and Kat Winkenwerder of T.C. Roberson, 6-2,6-1.
