Appalachian State junior libero Courtney Rhein has been named as the SoCon Volleyball ‘Defensive Player of the Week’ for her efforts in leading the Mountaineers to three wins last week.In sweeps over Furman, Western Carolina and Wofford, Rhein averaged 5.44 digs per set and also tallied 14 assists.
Rhein, who leads the conference in digs at 4.85/set, recently surpassed Kathy Granack in the ASU record books with 1,099 career digs, good for ninth all-time.
In addition to her career mark, Rhein recorded match highs in digs against Western Carolina (20) and Wofford (17) last week as the Apps went 3-0 in SoCon play to improve to a conference-best 7-1 in SoCon matches this season.
On the season, Rhein has recorded 20 or more digs in seven matches and is averaging an impressive 5.46 digs per set against SoCon opponents. She has also totaled 73 assists on the season, just 11 shy of her career-high 84 from last season.
Rhein has also been an integral part of the Apps’ current five-match winning streak, which has helped propel the team to the top of the SoCon standings.
The ‘Defensive Player of the Week’ honors are the first of Rhein’s career and the first ‘Player of the Week’ honor for any Mountaineer this season.
Appalachian continues SoCon play this weekend when it travels to College of Charleston (Oct. 21) and The Citadel (Oct. 22) to battle two SoCon South Division foes.
