Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) built upon a solid start to the weekend with another impressive showing on Sunday, winning the men's "A" short track race before finishing second in the downhill, as Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa.) took the top spot in the women's "A" short track competition to lead the Lees-McRae College cycling team to a dominating performance at the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Mountain Bike Championships.
Werner posted his second individual win of the weekend in the short track, beating out teammate Bradford Perley (Kennebunkport, Maine) who finished in second place. Ezra Mullen (Nottingham, N.H.) finished eighth, as Joseph Welsh (Cordova, Tenn.), Trevor MacLean (Westport, Conn.), and Davis Bentley placed 13th, 15th, and 16th, respectively. Nathan Larson (Erie, Pa.) rounded out the Bobcat field in the men's "A" short track with a 19th-place finish.
Zac Felpel (Willow St., Pa.) took the top spot in the men's "B" short track race, edging out teammate Jake Boone (Hurst, Texas), as Matthew Zimmer (DeWitt, Iowa) and Dylan Knutson (Eagan, Minn.) finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Adam Downs (Eaton, Ohio) placed ninth as Chris Bennett finished 14th. William Smith (Kissimmee, Fla.) also finished fourth in the men's "C" race for the Bobcats.
Zaveta won the women's "A" short track race, as teammates Cinthia Lehner (Greer, S.C.) and Megan Baab finished sixth and 13th, respectively. Mackenzie Fillipi (Cary, N.C.) also placed third in the women's "B" race to round out the short track competition for the Bobcats. Zaveta also finished third in the women's "A" downhill race with a time of 3:13.87.
Eric Bercume (Barre, Mass.) beat out Werner for the top spot in the men's "A" downhill race, recording a time of 1:43.47 to best Werner's second-place mark of 1:46.43. Sam Cookson (Herndon, Va.) placed 10th with a time of 2:14.61, as Carter Luck and Larson finished 13th and 18th, respectively, with marks of 2:17.01 and 2:21.89. Perley also finished 21st with a time of 2:28.05 for the Bobcats.
Lees-McRae returns to the course on Friday, October 28 when the Bobcats travel to Angel Fire, N.M. to participate in the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals.
