Quarterback Alex Villanueva ran for 66 yards and passed for 100 yards as the Avery High football team defeated Madison 25-14 on the road Friday night.

Villanueva hooked up with Hunter Sheilds on an 88-yard bomb with 8:57 to play in the first half that gave the Vikings (5-4 overall; 2-3 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference) a 10-7 lead. Tyler Hoffman's 22-yard scamper with three minutes left in the second quarter gave Madison (4-4; 1-4) a 14-10 halftime lead.
But the Vikings jumped back in front for good on Thomas Moore's one-yard run with 14 seconds left in the third period. Dustin Clark's 18-yard fumble return in the final stanza put the contest out of reach. Clark also had a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Madison outgained Avery 342-211, but the Patriots turned ball over twice and they committed 14 penalties for 165 yards. Avery had ten penalties for 95 yards.
Hoffman ran for 153 yards and a touchdown to pace the Patriots running game. Madison ran for 227 yards. Shields caught three passes for 93 yards and a score to pace Avery.
The Vikings return home to play Mountain Heritage next Friday night. It will also be Senior Night for the Vikings.
