The Watauga High men's soccer team continued its winning ways Wednesday night.
And the Pioneers also posted another shutout as they defeated Fred T. Foard 1-0 in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game in Newton. Zack Helms scored the game's only goal at the five-minute mark of the first half on a corner kick by Logan Raichle.
"It was well executed," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "Logan had a great corner kick, it cross right towards the net, and Zack finished it off. It was a beautiful play."
Unfortunately after that, the contest turned into a physical, defensive battle. Brian Greer was injuried late in the second half, when he was pushed out of bounds into a cyclone fence. Greer was taken to a local hospital for x-rays. Results were unknown as of press time.
"It got pretty physical," McKay said. "But we stood our ground. Defensively, we've been pretty solid this season. We've done a good job limiting the other team's chances."
The Pioneers (12-3-1 overall; 5-1-1 NW3A/4A) have only given up three goals this season in league play. The only conference teams to score against WHS are Alexander Central, Hibriten (both at home) and Hickory. The Alexander Central and Hibriten goals both came in overtime periods.
And the Pioneers hope to continue their stingy pace Monday when first-place Hickory comes to town. The Red Tornadoes defeated WHS 1-0 on a controversial goal in their first meeting back on September 14. The Red Tornadoes (who are 6-0 in league play) had their non-conference game at Wilkes Central postponed on Wednesday night. The Eagles had to play a make-up game in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference.
"And they were here scouting us tonight," McKay said. "They certainly weren't here watching Fred T. Foard, because they all ready played them (Monday night). It's an honor to have a team with a great tradition like theirs to watch us play. Monday is a big game, especially for us. It's been a while since we've won a conference championship. But win, lose or draw, we've given ourselves a chance."
