Griewisch Named SAC Women's Cross Country Runner Of The Week PDF Print

Lenoir-Rhyne's Kate Griewisch has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner Of The Week, league officials announced Tuesday.

 

Griewisch wins the award for the third time this season and for the 12th time in her collegiate career.
Griewisch, a two-time NCAA Division II All-American (2009 and 2010) from Banner Elk, N.C., finished ninth out of 289 runners at the Charlotte Invitational this past Friday at McAlpine Park.
Griewisch ran the 5K course in a personal-record 17:30 and was the top non-NCAA Division I runner in the race.
Griewisch is a three-time All-South Atlantic Conference First-Team honoree (2008-10) and has won the past two NCAA Division II Southeast Regional races.
Griewisch also finished first at the 2009 South Atlantic Conference Championship and led the Bears to back-to-back league titles in 2008 and 2009.
An outstanding student as well, Griewisch was named the 2009 and 2010 SAC Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Of The Year and earned 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Second Team honors for women's cross country and track and field.
Griewisch, a biology major with a 3.81 grade point average, won the prestigious Presidents' Award for 2010-11. The award is given annually by the South Atlantic Conference and is the league's top honor.
Catawba's Christian Crifasi was named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams next compete in the Blue Ridge Open on Friday, October 14, in Boone, N.C., beginning at 3 p.m.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Golf Compete At The Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Golf Teams finished tied for 10th and 12th overall, respectively, at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate which finished Tuesday at the Sea Trail Golf Links. L-R and Lincoln Memorial were the host schools of the tournament.
On the men's side, Wingate won the tournament four-under 572 on the par-72, 6,761-yard course while Lincoln Memorial's Eric Kennedy won in a playoff over Wingate's Brian Denton.
Lenoir-Rhyne shot a 605 (+29) while junior Brandon Squier (Advance, N.C.) was the Bears' top golfer as he finished tied for 32nd with a 150 (+6).
Freshman Zach Burket (Taylorsville, N.C.) and sophomore John White (Granite Falls, N.C.) both tied for 41st with a 151 (+7) for the Bears.
Senior Katie Thackerson (Earl, N.C.) led the Lenoir-Rhyne women's squad after shooting a 154 (+10) on the par-72, 5,988-yard course and tying for sixth. L-R junior Megan Katsch (Wilmington, N.C) tied for 41st with a 167 (+23).
UNC Pembroke won the women's tournament with a 618 (+42) while Lenoir-Rhyne shot a 675 (+99). The Braves also had the top individual as Dana Watkins carded a 148 (+4) to finish first overall.
The Lenoir-Rhyne men's team next competes in the Lincoln Memorial Fall Invitational in Tazewell, Tenn., while the women's squad plays in the Patsy Rendleman Invitational in Salisbury, N.C. Both tournaments are scheduled for October 17 and 18.

Mars Hill Volleyball Downs Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1

 

The Mars Hill College Volleyball Team (7-5, 4-5) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University (11-8, 3-5), 3-1, in a South Atlantic Conference match Tuesday night at Stanford Arena.  The Lions defeated the Bears by scores of 25-17, 25-15, 25-27 and 25-21 to win their third straight match.
Mars Hill was led by Marissa Wixson (Spring, Texas), who tallied a double-double on the night with 13 kills and 17 digs.
Chelsea Larsen (Greer, S.C.) added 10 kills and Maggie Murphy (Richmond, Va.) tallied a match-high 27 digs for the Lions, who held a 12-2 advantage in service aces en route to the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior middle blocker Chelsea Hill (Lexington, N.C.) finished with a match-high 15 kills despite the loss.
Meanwhile, junior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) chipped in with 24 assists and sophomore return specialist Kaitlyn Burton (Mills River, N.C.) added a double-double (12 assists and 11 digs) for the Bears as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Tusculum in a South Atlantic Conference match on Friday beginning at 7 p.m.  Mars Hill plays at Brevard in a league contest Friday at 7 p.m., as well.
