No. 8 LRU Women's Soccer Shuts Out Montevallo, 1-0 PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Soccer Team (7-1), ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, won its sixth straight match Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over the University of Montevallo (2-7).

 

The match was the first of the Hughston Sports Clinic Shootout played at the Walden Sports Complex.
Senior defender Jessica Schob (Ione, Calif.) scored the lone goal of the match for the Bears in the 66th minute off a corner kick from senior midfielder Mariel Mena (Gainesville, Fla.). The goal was Schob's first of the year. Mena was credited with the assist on the play.
Lenoir-Rhyne held an 18-2 advantage in shots taken while junior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) earned the shutout as she stopped three shots for the Bears. The shutout was also L-R's third in its last four matches.
Montevallo's Kaitlin Thomas (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) suffered the loss despite allowing just one goal to go along with three saves.
Lenoir-Rhyne takes on No. 23 Columbus State, the host school, on Sunday in the final day of the shootout beginning at 1:30 p.m. Montevallo returns home to face USC Aiken on Sunday beginning at Noon.


Lenoir-Rhyne Cross Country Competes At The Charlotte Invitational

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams competed Friday afternoon in the Charlotte Invitational at McAlpine Park.
L-R senior and two-time All-American Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) finished ninth out of 289 runners in the 5K Gold Race with a personal-record 17:31. Griewisch was also the top non-NCAA Division I runner in the race.
Senior Amanda Barnes (Chelmsford, Mass.) ran a 20:04 to finish 117th while sophomore Laura Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) placed 122nd with a time of 20:13 as the Bears finished 17th out of 36 schools.
Virginia Tech won the women's race while USC Upstate's Joan Tangwar was the top overall runner with a 16:53.
On the men's side, Lenoir-Rhyne finished 22nd out of 34 squads and was led by freshman Mike York (Kannapolis, N.C.). York ran a 26:41 on the 8K Gold Race to place 82nd overall while freshman James Palaniuk (Marina, Calif.) finished 94th with a 26:52 for the Bears.
Virginia Tech also won the men's competition and Liberty's Zac Edwards finished first overall with a 24:08.
The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams next compete in the Blue Ridge Open on Friday, October 14, at 3 p.m., in Boone, N.C.
