Pioneers Rally To Tie Panthers PDF Print

The Watuaga High men's soccer team finally gave up its first goal at home this season.

Ironically, it was a fluke goal as the Pioneers (10-3-1 overall; 3-1-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) earned a 1-1 tie with Hibriten at Jack Groce Stadium. The Panthers scored their only goal in the 92nd minute of the second overtime period. The ball just slipped by sure-handed goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, giving Hibriten a 1-0 lead.
"We controlled the match," saisd WHS coach Woody McKay. "We simply dominated them. It was a crazy goal, but Jeff is a great keeper. It just happened to get by him. You can't blame the guy. He didn't see a lot of shots during the course of the game. I guess it just surprised him."
The Pioneers outshot the Panther, 32-5. And they finally pushed one through at the 97 minute mark of the second overtime session. Zack Helms scored on an assist by Alex Parsons to tie the game.
"What a beautiful cross by Alex," McKay said. "He put the ball in a great position for Zack, and Zack drilled into the back of the net. It was a great goal, and our guys showed a lot of determination to come back. We never had a letdown after that fluke goal."
The Pioneers are unbeaten in their last three games. They travel to St. Stephens on Monday. The JV team and Hibriten played to a 2-2 tie. Canyon Mueller and Justin Hall scored for WHS; Trey Ollis and Dillon Hill had the assists.
NOTES: Sam Schell of the WHS soccer team will be our halftime guest during Friday night's broadcast of the WHS-Elizabethon game.
