No.8 LRU Women's Soccer Rallies To Win PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (6-1, 3-0) remained undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference as the Bears came from behind to defeat Carson-Newman (3-4, 1-2), 2-1, Tuesday evening at McCown Field.

L-R, winners of five straight matches and ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, has won all three of its league matches on the road so far this year.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Lenoir-Rhyne rallied with two goals after intermission to come away with the victory.
L-R senior forward Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.) tied the score in the 62nd minute with her team-leading fifth goal of the season when she volleyed on a free ball from about 25 yards out.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior midfielder and two-time All-American Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) then scored the game-winner at the 71:05 mark on a goal from the left side. Junior forward Carley Griffin (Fresno, Calif.) was credited with the assist.
Carson-Newman opened the scoring in the 17th minute on Trenna Howell's (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) team-leading ninth goal of 2011 but the Eagles were shut out the rest of the way.
L-R held an 18-6 advantage in shots taken while junior Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the win in goal after allowing just one score.
Carson-Newman's goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) suffered the loss despite tallying nine saves in the contest.
L-R travels to Columbus, Ga., to take on Montevallo on the first day of the Hughston Clinic Shootout Friday beginning at 2:30 p.m. Carson-Newman plays at North Georgia Saturday at 5 p.m.

 

LRU's Katie Thackerson Finishes Tied For Third At Tusculum Fall Classic

 

Lenoir-Rhyne senior Katie Thackerson (Earl, N.C.) shot a 150 (+6) to tie for third overall at the Tusculum Fall Golf Classic, which concluded Tuesday at the Link Hills Country Club.
Thackerson led the L-R Women's Golf Team to a fifth-place finish out of 12 schools. Lenoir-Rhyne shot a 663 (+87) on the par-72, 5,805-yard course while UNC Pembroke won with a 598 (+22).
Lenoir-Rhyne junior Megan Katsch (Wilmington, N.C.) finished 28th overall with a 165 (+21) while Dana Watkins (UNC Pembroke) was the top individual for the tournament as she carded a 146 (+2).
On the men's side, the Bears finished sixth out of 12 with a 579 (+11) on the par-71, 6,743-yard course and were led by junior Sam Pressley (Knoxville, Tenn.). Pressley fired a one-over 143 to tie for ninth overall.
Freshman Zach Burket (Taylorsville, N.C.) finished one stroke behind Pressley and tied for 12th after 36 holes for the Bears.
Lincoln Memorial won the tournament with a 569 (+1) and finished one shot better than the host school, Tusculum. The Railsplitters' Jamie Chapman took home individual honors with a 134 (-8).
The L-R Men's and Women's Golf Teams host the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday at Sea Trail Golf Resort in Sunset Beach, N.C.

No. 16 Wingate Volleyball Shuts Out Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-0

 

The 16th-ranked Wingate University Volleyball Team (13-0, 7-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 3-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (10-6, 2-3), 3-0, Tuesday evening in a South Atlantic Conference match at Cuddy Arena.
The Bulldogs defeated the Bears by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-17 and ran their league winning streak to 71 matches.
Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) led the way with a match-high 14 kills for the Bulldogs, who have also won 36 consecutive regular season matches.
Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) dished out 35 assists while Maggie Malone (Chicago, Ill.) added 16 digs for Wingate in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by freshman outside hitter Whitney Brinkley (Asheville, N.C.) with six kills while freshman libero Emily Culler (Mount Airy, N.C.) added a team-high 18 digs in the losing effort.
Junior setter Meredith Lutz (Newton, N.C.) chipped in with 12 assists and nine digs despite the setback for the Bears, who saw their three-match winning streak come to an end as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Carson-Newman in a South Atlantic Conference match Friday at 7 p.m.  Wingate faces Shaw and Fayetteville State in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday afternoon.
