On the strength of one of the top individual performances by an Appalachian State University defender in recent memory, linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough (Decatur, Ga./Cedar Grove) has hauled in a plethora of awards on Monday.

The junior has been named The Sports Network’s National Defensive Player of the Week, the Southern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week and the College Football Performance Awards’ National Linebacker of the Week for his showing in last Saturday’s 14-12 triumph over No. 13 Chattanooga.

Kimbrough filled the stat sheet versus UTC with 11 tackles, two sacks, two-and-a-half tackles for loss, two pass break-ups, a quarterback hurry and, most importantly, a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown that provided the winning points in the Mountaineers’ two-point victory.
Kimbrough made perhaps the biggest play of his career when he intercepted Moc quarterback B.J. Coleman and returned it 46 yards for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 13:38 to go in the contest.
Kimbrough’s 11 tackles, two sacks, 2.5 TFL and two pass break-ups were all career highs. He led an ASU defense that limited Chattanooga’s high-powered offense to 12 points (10 below its season average going into the game), 302 total yards (70 below its season average) and 32 rushing yards (92 below its season average).
Kimbrough’s recognition marks the second-straight week that an ASU player has been tabbed as the national and SoCon Player of the Week. Punter/place kicker Sam Martin (Fayetteville, Ga./Starr’s Mill) was named The Sports Network and SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in ASU’s 41-6 win over Savannah State on Sept. 17.
Third-ranked Appalachian (3-1, 1-0 SoCon) faces another stern conference test on Saturday when it travels to face No. 8 Wofford (2-1, 1-0 SoCon) at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. The contest will be the first shown on the new SoCon Sports Network, which is carried across the Southeast, mainly on Public Broadcasting Stations (PBS).
