The Watauga High volleyball team claimed another victim on its way to a possible Northwestern 3A/4A Conference championship. The Pioneers (8-4 overall; 3-0 NW3A/4A), who won the conference title last season, defeated Alexander Central 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-11) at Lentz-Eggers Gym in Boone Thursday night. It was also WHS's 24th consecutive win in league play dating back to 2009.
Ironically, the last team to beat the Pioneers was Alexander Central. The Cougars shared the league title with WHS that season, but they won the coin toss and earned the No.1 seed in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A state playoffs. But Thursday, the Pioneers dominated the match from start to finish.
"We did a good job tonight," said WHS coach Kris Hagaman. "It was nice to see us come back after the disappointing weekend we had (in losses against Starmount and Reagan in a tri-match last Saturday). It was a strong effort on our part."
Kristen Carter paced WHS once again with 20 assists and nine digs. Colby Combs had seven kills and three blocks; Hannah Stewart had seven kills; Channing Hagaman had six kills; Anna Church had seven digs and three aces; Skylar Hicks had 14 digs.
"We're very proud of the streak," Hagaman said. "But we need to play with more feeling. I'm really not happy with the way we're playing right now. We need to have to play with more emotion; we need to be more aggressive."
The Pioneers travel to South Caldwell Tuesday night, September 20. The JV team defeated Alexander Central 2-1 (14-25, 25-16, 25-20). The Pioneers were led by Whitney Dunningan with 13 assists and 17 digs. Kierstan McClannon had seven kills and eight digs; and Meredith Farthinghad nine kills and 18 digs.
