WHS Soccer Wins NW3A/4A Opener PDF Print

The Watauga High men's soccer team is on quite a roll.

The Pioneers (8-1 overall; 1-0 Northwestern 3A/4A conference) won their sixth consecutive game Monday night as they knocked off Fred T. Foard 2-0 at Jack Groce Stadium in the NW3A/4A Conference opener for both teams. Zack Helms scored the game's first goal at the 52-minute mark of the second half on an assist by Logan Raichle to snap a scoreless tie.
Helms added an insurance goal on a penalty kick at the 65-minute mark.
"I'm real proud of our guys," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "We were shorthanded tonight (Alex Parsons was out of town, Joey Spinetto is on the shelf with a hamstring injury and goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell is out for a week with a dislocated finger), but our guys really stepped it up. We've really been tough to beat at home. We've done a good job protecting our home field."
And the Pioneers have been extremely stingy at home as well. The Pioneers haven't given up a goal at home this season. That's four home games and a scoreless streak of 320 minutes. Jake Chasteen, who stepped in for Caldwell Monday night, picked up the shutout.
"Our defense has been superb this season, especially at home," McKay said. "We done a great job marking our people, and communicating out there. And beating Foard tonight was big. We haven't beaten a (Class) 3A school in a while. It was a big win for us to win the conference opener."
It's WHS's first win against a Class 3A school in two years (the last time the Pioneers did it was in 2009). The Pioneers hit the road and play at Hickory Wednesday night. The Red Tornadoes, led by former WHS assistant coach Brian Jillings, is ranked sixth in Class 3A.
"It will be a haul," McKay said. "Hickory is one of the top teams in our conference. We'll go down there and give it our best shot."
The JV team (5-0-2; 0-0-1) played Foard to a 2-2 tie. Dillon Hill and Justin Hall scored for the Pioneers.
