After an overnight out in the rugged Sampson area of Watauga County, the rescue of an injured Granite Falls fisherman was accomplished, thanks to a National Guard chopper.  60-year-old Dale Patrick Sullivan was found by family and friends (Photos by Jim Landis, Blowing Rock Fire/Rescue)

in the Rock House Creek and Buffalo Cove areas near the line between Caldwell and Watauga counties just after daylight this morning.  Paul Bucannon, Watauga County Assistant Fire Marshal says that Sullivan has a broken ankle and crews found it too treacherous an area to carry him out on foot. The helicopter arrived shortly after noon, and Sullivan was carried out to a landing zone set up by Blowing Rock Fire/Rescue at Blowing Rock Parks and Rec.
Family members told Buchanan that Sullivan was camping with his wife at their fishing cabin in the Windy Gap community of Watauga County when Sullivan left to go fishing around 7 a.m., Saturday. Reports say he told his wife he would be back around 2 p.m. When he didn’t return, family members began searching for him and then reported him missing to Watauga County officials around 9:30 p.m.   Crews from Caldwell and Watauga County were searching early this morning when two family members located Sullivan about two miles from the fishing cabin. One family member stayed with him and the other came out for help. Search crews reached Sullivan around 9 a.m. today.
Crews responding are the Caldwell County Fire Marshal/Emergency Management office, Watauga County Fire Marshal’s Office and Watauga Rescue. Volunteer fire departments responding are Blowing Rock, Stewart Simmons, Yadkin Valley, Patterson, Kings Creek and Valmead.
