UPDATE: Harper Hall Reopens, Classes Resume PDF Print

The Katherine Harper Science building has reopened for classes—except for three classrooms where students fell ill early this morning, but the investigation into the cause of the incident at the Rivers Street building goes on. Three students were rushed to Watauga Medical Center while ASU Police evacuated the building and the probe into the cause was started by Boone Fire.  At this point, the search for answers is falling to the ASU Industrial Hygienist, as nothing turned up in the initial probe.  ASU Police, then Boone Fire, Boone Police and Watauga Medics were all called to the scene about 8:30 this morning, with reports indicating that three students may have passed out due to fumes. Those students were transported by Watauga Medics to Watauga Medical Center to evaluate their illnesses, while staff members said that a number of students became sick on their stomachs in the north end of the building, where the students passed out. The building was quickly evacuated, with students and staff waiting on the lawn and driveways for some indication as to whether classes might continue in Harper Hall. No one outside reported any particular smell inside, but Boone firemen entered the building with air packs and air sensors to try to determine the cause.
