Madison Bumgarner has seen it too many times this season. The San Francisco Giants just can't score enough runs for him, and the lefthander is usually left to fend for himself. That was the case once again Friday night as the Giants nipped the Houston Astros 2-1 at AT&T Park. But Bumgarner did his part.
He went six-plus innings and gave up one earned run on five hits; he walked three and only struck out two as he picked up his eighth win if the year. It was only his second win in his last six starts. Jeff Keppinger's two-run single in the fifth snapped a scoreless tie and gave the Giants a 2-0 lead. Bumgarner and two relievers made it stand up.
But the Giants (70-62), who have struggled mightily in the month of August, still find themselves trailing the Arizona Diamondbacks by three games for first place in the National League West; they trail the Atlanta Braves by the whopping margin of 8 1/2 games in the NL Wildcard race.
Bumgarner is 8-12 this season with a 3.59 earned-run-average.
