One thing is for sure, Avery High football coach Darrell Brewer is going to have a lot of sleepless nights this season. After the Vikings (1-1) were trounced by Mitchell in their season opener last week, they survived a huge rally Friday night as they hung on to beat West Wilkes 35-34 in a non-conference game in Millers Creek. Quarterback Alex Villanueva turned in a stellar effort as the Vikings cracked the win column for the first time this season.
The senior was 10-22 for 230 yards and three touchdown passes. He also helped the Vikings with his legs as he rambled for a team-high 77 yards and scored twice. And Avery thanks to that effort built what seemed like a commanding 35-14 lead with 2:01 to play in the third quarter.
But the Blackhawks (1-1) came charging back with a furious rally in the final stanza. West Wilkes scored three touchdowns in a little more than six minutes and cut the lead to one point with 4:41 left. The Blackhawks recovered consecutive on-side kicks that led to a pair of scoring drives-----a one-yard run by Tylers Woods made it 35-28 with 8:06 remaining; and a one-yard run by Seth Absher with 4:41 left made it 35-34, but Bryson Mosteller missed the game-tying extra point.
The Vikings had 393 yards offensively, but they coughed up 442 yards. And Woods paced the West Wilkes' running game as he rambled for a game-high 188 yards on 25 carries (a 7.2 yard-per-carry average). Thomas Moore was Avery's leading receiver. He caught three passes for 72 yards; Austin Robbie caught two touchdown passes.
The Vikings return home to play Watauga at MacDonald Stadium next Friday night.
