The Watauga High JV football team opened the season on a sour note Thursday night.

The Pioneers dropped a 27-10 decision to A.C. Reynolds in Asheville. Quarterback Austin Northern hooked up with wide receiver Jeffrey Gainey on a 42-yard scoring strike; and Northern also scored on a two-point conversion run. The WHS (0-1) defense also registered a safety.
The JV team plays its home opener next Thursday night against Ashe County at Jack Groce Stadium.
