Football Fall Camp Report: Aug. 17 PDF Print

In perhaps the most grueling day of its fall camp to date, Appalachian State University football practiced twice on Wednesday, capping the long day with a 146-play intrasquad scrimmage at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Appalachian practiced for an hour-and-a-half in shorts and helmets on Wednesday morning before the afternoon’s lengthy scrimmage.

The intrasquad scrimmage, the second of three full-length intrasquad duels scheduled for fall camp, covered  27 series. ASU’s defense turned in its finest performance of the preseason, allowing just six touchdowns in 27 series with two of the six scores coming on possessions that started just 25 yards away from the end zone. The Mountaineer defense surrendered only 4.2 yards per play and forced two turnovers and seven three-and-outs.

Appalachian recorded 14 tackles for loss in the impressive defensive effort, led by two from junior linebacker Brandon Grier (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte). Another junior linebacker, Jeremy Kimbrough (Decatur, Ga./Cedar Grove), notched two of ASU’s 13 pass break-ups, while a third member of the Mountaineers’ projected starting linebacking crew, junior Lanston Tanyi (Shelby, N.C./Shelby), finished with a tackle for loss, a pass break-up and several tackles and quarterback hurries.

Grier, junior Nick Canepa (Hubert, N.C./Swansboro) and sophomores Zac Baker (Tunnel Hill, Ga./Northwest Whitfield) and Adam Scott (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) all registered sacks. Junior defensive back Demetrius McCray (Covington, Ga./Newton) broke up a pair of passes and junior linebacker Justin Lloyd (Charlotte, N.C./Victory Christian) was responsible for both takeaways with an interception and a fumble recovery.

Offensively, a number of youngsters saw significant playing time with veteran skill players Travaris Cadet (Miami, Fla./Central), Cedric Baker Boney (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover), Michael Frazier (Conway, S.C./Conway), Terrence McLean (Laurinburg, N.C./Scotland County), Tony Washington (High Point, N.C./T.W. Andrews), Andrew Peacock (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham) and Jamill Lott (Kannapolis, N.C./A.L. Brown) all sitting out of the scrimmage. Additionally, quarterbacks DeAndre Presley (Tampa, Fla./Middleton) and Jamal Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) and wide receiver Brian Quick (Columbia, S.C./Ridge View) saw limited action.

The young players took advantage of the opportunity for extended playing time, led by true freshmen Darius Smith (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and Bobo Beathard (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield). Smith rushed for a scrimmage-best 90 yards on 19 carries, including touchdown runs of 25 and seven yards. Beathard led all receivers with 69 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown catch from Jackson. Walk-on Simms McElfresh (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) had a scrimmage-best six receptions for 54 yards.

Redshirt freshman Kalik Barnes (Atlanta, Ga./Parkview) saw extensive action behind center, completing 14-of-25 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown while rushing 12 times for 32 yards.

Not included in the 146 plays was extensive special-teams work. ASU place kickers Mark Powell (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) and Drew Stewart (Gastonia, N.C./North Gaston) combined to make 6-of-6 field goals on the afternoon.

Fans have the opportunity to see the Mountaineers scrimmage for the third and final time before the Sept. 3 season opener at Virginia Tech when ASU holds its annual Fan Fest on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. For more information, visit
