Duke-Tennessee Square Off In Maui PDF Print

University of Tennessee first-year men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has quite a challenge on his hands.

The Volunteers will take on Duke in the championship bracket of the Maui Classic November 21 at the Lahaina Civic Center. The winner will play either Michigan or Memphis in the semifinal round. Duke has won the Maui classic four times, 1992, 1997, 2001, and 2007.
The Maui Classic is also expanding its field to 12 teams this season with four additional Division I mainland teams. Included in that group are UNC-Greensboro, Belmont, Towson and Middle Tennessee State. Each of the eight Island teams--Duke, Tennessee, Kansas, Georgetown, Michigan, Memphis, and UCLA (excluding Chaminade)--will play one game each against a mainland team (seven first-round games in all) before they venture to Maui for the championship round on November 21.
The mainland teams will then play each other in a four-game regional event. That sequence will be known as the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational "Mainland Teams.
The Vols will open the season at home against UNC-Greensboro on November 11; Duke entertains Belmont in a first-round game. The championship round of the Maui Classic is scheduled for November 21-23.
Martin, who replaced Bruce Pearl as coach of the Vols last March, inherits a team that was 19-15 and lost to Michigan in the opening round of the Charlotte Regional in the NCAA Tournament. Martin spent the last three years at Missouri State, where he led that school to back-to-back 20-win seasons and two post-season tournaments (the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship in 2009-10 and the second round of the National Invitational Tournament last season).
