The Greensboro Grasshoppers hung on for the 12-9 victory against the 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads, before 3,333 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Friday night. After a pair of scoreless innings by both Crawdads RHP Luke Jackson (L, 3-2) and Greensboro LHP Greg Nappo (W, 1-0), both teams exchanged three runs in their respective halves of the third inning. The Grasshoppers (54-44, 14-14) then struck next with eight runs (only two earned) in the top of the fourth inning against Jackson and RHP Ben Rowen. The Crawdads (58-38, 18-10) started chipping away immediately in the bottom of the fourth. RF Josh Richmond belted a solo homer to start the frame, cutting it to 11-4. Hickory continued down the comeback trail with five combined runs in the sixth and seventh. Facing RHP Chris Shafer in the sixth, DH Tomas Telis got on with a one-out single. Richmond added a single and was followed by a walk from CF Jake Skole, loading the bases. C Kellin Deglan brought the 'Dads closer with an RBI single, scoring Telis from third. Richmond then raced home on a passed ball charged to Realmuto, before a wild pitch brought in Skole later in the inning, chipping the Grasshoppers lead to 11-7. Hickory moved even closer with a two-out, two-run triple by Skole in the seventh, bringing Hickory within two runs, 11-9.
The Grasshoppers padded the lead with a run on a double play ball hit by SS Dan Black in the top of the eighth, stretching the advantage to 12-9.
