For the second-straight year and third time in the last four seasons, Appalachian State University volleyball earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.Head coach Matt Ginipro added, “Earning another AVCA Team Academic Award is a huge honor and one that makes me very proud of every player on this team. Our team works extremely hard in the classroom and striving to have the highest GPA in the department is a part of our team culture. Each semester, this team impresses me with their academic performance and I’m looking forward to hanging another Team Academic Award in our locker room.”
The Mountaineers are one of 92 NCAA Division I teams to be honored. From the Southern Conference, Georgia Southern was the only other recipient.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
Seven Apps were named to the 2010-11 SoCon all-Academic Team for maintaining at least a 3.2 grade point average while competing in the majority of the team’s matches in the season. Appalachian placed 13 players on the university’s fall academic honor roll, and 12 repeated the feat in the spring semester.
Additionally, Maggie Seeds (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) earned SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week honors in November. ASU boasts a 3.67 cumulative team GPA.
ASU opens the 2011 campaign by hosting the Appalachian Invitational on August 26-27. The squad’s first match of the year is set for Friday, Aug. 26 against NC State at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Center.
