The Watuaga Juniors saw their dreams of winning a district title evaporate Sunday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Austin Owen scattered four hits and struck out 11 men in 6 1/3 innings, Ryan McRae blasted a two-run homer as Wilkes won the District 7 title by knocking off Watauga 7-1 in Wilkesboro. Jacob Soule had two of the Watuaga hits, including a double; Hunter Isaacs drove in Watauga's only run with an RBI single in  the fourth.
Adam Green suffered the loss. He went 3 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Matt Lambert came on in relief with two outs in the fourth. He gave up two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Ironically, Lambert had five strikeouts in the sixth as two batters reached base after they struck out.
The 11-12-year-old District 7 championship game will be played tonight at the Optomist Park in Boone at 5 pm. Watuaga takes on Morganton in the finals. Watauga defeated Morganton 9-8 at Catawba Meadows July 12.
A win tonight, and Watuaga wins the District title and advances to the state tournament in Forest City; a loss, and the teams will play a one-game, winner-take-all affair Tuesday night at a site to be determined.
