RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of N.C. 194 from Tom Shook Road to Rominger Road between Banner Elk and Valle Crucis starting at 8 a.m. Monday, July 18 for about three weeks to stabilize a steep slope. NCDOT contractor Maymead Inc. is building retaining walls along this section of winding road, as well as repaving it.
They have determined that while grading the steep terrain for the walls that additional safety precautions need to be taken to protect motorists from the potential of rocks and soil falling into the highway.
During the closure, the following signed detour will be in place:
* Heading south, take Camp Broadstone Road to N.C. 105 to N.C. 184 back to N.C. 194.
* Heading north, take N.C. 184 to N.C. 105 to Camp Broadstone Road back to N.C. 194.
Updated travel information is available by calling 511 or online at www.ncdot.gov/travel.
