45th Senate District Moves West PDF Print

The 45th NC Senate district shifts westward under the draft proposal of the Republican writers of the redistricting plan, with current Senator Dan Soucek liking the plan.  The 93rd house, represented by Jonathan Jordan, would remain the same—Ashe and Watauga.

Soucek said this morning that putting the entire High Country in his senatorial district is a good one. But the new 45th  takes in Caldwell as well as Alleghany, but Soucek says the district would be homogenous. The maps also would place five pairs of incumbent senators in the same proposed district, meaning they could potentially face each other in a primary or general election in 2012. The five pairs would mean no incumbent lives in five other proposed districts. The General Assembly is expected to approve legislative and congressional maps by July 28. A legislative session designed to vote on the districts was scheduled to begin Wednesday. A public hearing on the General Assembly district proposal was set for next Monday.
