A homeowner shot and killed an armed intruder as he broke into the home early yesterday morning in western Wilkes County, according to Sheriff Chris Shew.  The intruder, Philip Jonathan Ange, 35, of Greenville, NC, had reportedly been camping for several days on an adjacent lot, threw rocks, cursed and tore up a storm door at the property of James Brian Haynes, 40, a few hours earlier. Ange died en route to Wilkes Regional Medical Center, said Wilkes County Sheriff Chris Shew, who said the shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. at 268 Lonesome Pine Road. Haynes is reported to have shot  Ange twice, once in the head and once in the upper body.
A Wilkes County sheriff's deputy had responded to the home earlier Tuesday morning with the earlier incident, but could not find the suspect.  The men apparently did not know each other, and the investigation is continuing, Shew said, with no charges filed.
