Charlotte Smith has been named the new women's basketball coach at Elon University.

Elon Athletics Director David Blank made the announcement Thursday afternoon. Smith, who scored more than 2,000 points during her playing career at the University of North Carolina, becomes the sixth coach in the history of the women's basketball program at Elon.
She replaces Karen Barefoot, who resigned in early June to take the head coaching job at Old Dominian. Smith spent the last nine years as an assistant coach with the Tar Heels, working for Sylvia Hatchell.
Smith recorded 2,094 points and 1,200 rebounds during her career (1992-95) with the Tar Heels. She was the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in 1992, and she hit the game-winning shot at the horn in the 1994 NCAA championship game against Louisiana Tech. Smith is also one of two North Carolina women's basketball players to have her jersey (No. 23) retired.
Following her collegiate career, Smith played two years in Italy, two years in the American Basketball League and she spent eight seasons in the WNBA.
